2009 $5 Silver Proof Coin Queensland
General Coin Information
Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of self-government for the Australian state of Queensland, the Royal Australian Mint has released the 2009 $5 Silver Proof Coin Queensland. The commemorative coin marks the sixth release of the Mint's 150 Years of State Government Series.
Queensland was originally part of New South Wales, but the independent thinking citizens wanted a government of their own. In an effort to achieve this, they signed petitions to Queen Victoria of England. On 6 June 1859, the Queen signed Letters Patent creating Queensland as a separate colony. The sixth of June is still celebrated as Queensland Day.
Today, Queensland has a thriving state economy based mainly on agriculture and tourism. With a large portion of the state in the tropical region, it has earned itself the nickname 'The Sunshine State.' Destinations such as Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef draw tourists from around the world.
An interesting fact is that the state was almost names Cooksland, in honor of the famed explorer Captain James Cook. However, the Queen did not like the name, and instead favored Queensland named for her.
The Queensland coin is minted from one troy ounce of silver and ships in a presentation box.
Obverse Design
Ian Rank-Broadley current portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the reverse. Also included are the inscriptions "Elizabeth II", "Australia", "2009" and "5 Dollars".
Reverse Design
