As part of the worldwide celebration, the Perth Mint has released the International Year of Astronomy 2009 1oz Silver Proof Coin. The colorful reverse is a beautiful example of the creativeness associated with the Perth Mint.
2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the creation of a powerful telescope by Galileo. To remember this significant achievement and to foster interest in the field, over 137 countries are participating in the International Year of Astronomy.
The Astronomy coin will ship in a black presentation case and will include a numbered certificate of authenticity. It is composed of 1 oz. of 99.9% pure silver. An extremely limited mintage of only 7,500 units will be produced.

Obverse Design
The obverse contains Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Also included are the inscriptions "Queen Elizabeth II", "Australia", "2009" and "1 Dollar".
Reverse Design
The Perth Mint's historic 'P' mintmark is seen on the reverse along with an image of two young people observing the night sky with a telescope. The night sky is shaded in a colorful red to black. Also seen is a depiction of the Southern Cross constellation and the inscription "International Year of Astronomy 2009".
