50th Anniversary of Barbie 1oz Silver Proof Coin
General Coin Information
New York’s annual toy fair in 1959 saw the introduction of a new generation of dolls, designed to be more adult like in their shape than previous dolls had been. These new dolls were called Barbie's, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their debut, the Perth Mint has released the 50th Anniversary of Barbie™ 1oz Silver Proof Coin.
Most dolls up to the 1950's had baby-like features. Ruth Handler, co-founder of the toy manufacturer Mattel, felt that if dolls were more adult-like, the kids who played with them could imagine them in more professional roles. Pretending the dolls were lawyers, doctors or perhaps even the president would inspire the kids.
Initially shunned by the toy industry, Mattel pursued production anyway. This proved to be a wise financial move. Over a billion Barbie's have been sold since their introduction.
Issued as legal tender under the government of Tuvalu, these Barbie coins have a face value of $1. They ship in a pink presentation case with the Barbie anniversary logo on the lid. Also included will be a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
If available, this coin may be purchased online from the following Perth Mint page:
