General Coin Information

November 9, 1989 is remembered as the official last day of a symbol of separation and oppression of the German people. As a 20th anniversary remembrance of this special occasion, the Perth Mint has released the Fall of the Berlin Wall 1oz Silver Proof Coin.

The Berlin Wall was built by the former Soviet Union in the 1960's as a means to separate the area of Berlin they controlled from the rest of free Germany. With this wall, they could control who came in and out and prevent their people from escaping in mass to escape harsh conditions. Many attempts were made to escape anyway, several of which involved elaborate tunnels underneath the wall.

For more than two decades the wall stood as a reminder of Soviet control. Finally, in 1989, visa-free travel was allowed between both sides of Berlin. Shortly thereafter the wall was dismantled.

The Perth Mint coin celebrating the fall of the wall is minted from 1 ounce of 99.9% pure silver. It is issued as legal tender of the islands of Tuvalu with a face value of $1. The coin will ship in a presentation case and include a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The mint will release no more than 5,000 of the coins.

If available, this coin may be purchased online from the following Perth Mint page:

Obverse Design

The obverse contains Raphael Maklouf's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Also included are the inscriptions "Queen Elizabeth II", "Tuvalu", "2009" and "1 Dollar".

Reverse Design

On the reverse of the Berlin Wall coin, a large "20" is present to mark the 20th anniversary. The "20" separates an image of the sky colored blue with a peace dove flying in it from a close-up design of the Berlin Wall. Germany's Brandenburg Gate is shown at the bottom. The inscription "Fall of the Berlin Wall November 9th 1989" is shown in the sky section. The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark is seen as well.
