Sydney World Masters Games Coins
General Coin Information
In preparation for a sporting event that has more participants than the Olympics, the Perth Mint has issued the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games 1oz Silver Proof Coin as well as its companion, the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games $1 Coin. Both coins are authorized by the Sydney World Masters Games Organising Committee for issue to the public.
The World Masters Games began in 1985 and have been held approximately every four years since. Various events are enjoyed depending on the location of where the games are held. This year, 28 different sports are planned including including badminton, water polo, softball and cycling.
As the games accept athletes of varied abilities, they garner interest from thousands. In fact, it is not uncommon for over twice as many to participate in the World Masters as participate in the Olympics. The only base requirement is the minimum age of 25.
The Perth Mint silver proof coin celebrating the 2009 World Masters Games is minted from 1 ounce of 99.9% pure silver. The uncirculated coin contains base metals. Both are issued as legal tender of the islands of Tuvalu with a face value of $1. The proof coin will ship in a presentation case and include a numbered Certificate of Authenticity with a maximum mintage of 5,000. The uncirculated coin is affixed to an illustrated presentation card and has no mintage limits.
