2009 Countdown to London £5 Gold Proof Coin
General Coin Information
The 2009 Countdown to London £5 Gold Proof Coin has been issued by Royal Mint the as part of its 4 year 3,2,1 series leading up to the 2012 London Olympics . A '3' is featured on the 2009 coins to signify three years until the games arrive in London.
Swimming is the feature sport for this years coin, and the design incorporates two swimmers crossing the finish line. A '3' is placed in the center of the coin to hold with this years theme. 2010 will incorporate a '2', and 2011 will have a '1'.
4,000 of these 22 carat gold coins will be struck. The gold proofs can be ordered with a single coin presentation case, or purchasers may opt for the 4 coin case, so they can showcase the future years designs when they order them.
The Olympic Rings and logo on the coin are featured in color for the first time from the Royal Mint.
Obverse Design
Queen Elizabeth II's portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley appears on the obverse of the coin as well as the inscriptions "Elizabeth II," "DG REG FD" and the face value of "Five Pounds."
Reverse Design
Claire Aldridge designed the reverse to feature the sport of swimming. As such, it has two swimmers crossing the finish line, marks from a stopwatch and a "3", signifying the 3,2,1 countdown. Also shown are the inscriptions "2009," "Countdown" and "XXX Olympiad." The London 2012 logo and Olympic Rings are featured in color.
