General Coin Information
As part of the new 3,2,1 Countdown to London series, the Royal Mint has issued the 2009 Countdown to London £5 Silver Piedfort Proof Coin. These coins are part of a collection to be expanded on each year until the Olympics arrive in London in 2012.
"As the excitement builds over the next three years, it is fantastic to know that the Royal Mint will be alongside us, helping the whole country to join in with our celebrations" said London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe.
The first year for the Countdown series features a design of swimmers crossing the finish line, with a '3' in the center, signifying 3 years until 2012.
The Piedfort Proof coin contains twice the amount of silver found in the normal Countdown Silver Proof Coin, and is also twice as thick. Only 6,000 of these .925 sterling silver coins will be struck. Also, purchase of the 2009 Piedfort in a special 4 coin case insures you the ability to order the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Piedforts that will be struck in each corresponding year.
Obverse Design
Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse along with the inscriptions "Elizabeth II," "DG REG FD" and the face value of "Five Pounds."
Reverse Design
The reverse features a design by Claire Aldridge which showcases images of two Olympic swimmers, marks from a stopwatch and a "3", signifying the 3,2,1 countdown. Also shown are the inscriptions "2009," "Countdown" and "XXX Olympiad." The London 2012 logo and Olympic Rings are highlighted in color.
