2009 Countdown to London £5 Silver Proof Coin
General Coin Information
The Royal Mint has issued the 2009 Countdown to London £5 Silver Proof Coin as part of its 4 year series leading up to the 2012 London Olympics . As 2009 is 4 years away from the London games, this years coins feature a number 3 design, 2010 will have a number 2 design and 2011 a number 1 design.
Along with the '3', the reverse of the 2009 coins showcase two swimmers crossing the finish line. Markings from a stopwatch are seen along with a colored 2012 London logo and Olympic Rings.
30,000 of these silver coins will be struck in .925 sterling silver this year. Those who purchase the silver coin along with a special 4 coin case will have the option of ordering future years designs as they become available, and showcase them alongside the 2009 coin.
These coins mark the first time the Olympic Rings and logo on the coin are featured in color from the Royal Mint.
Obverse Design
Ian Rank-Broadley's right facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin. The inscriptions "Elizabeth II," "DG REG FD" and the face value of "Five Pounds" are seen as well.
Reverse Design
Claire Aldridge designed the reverse which contains images of two Olympic swimmers, marks from a stopwatch and a "3", signifying the 3,2,1 countdown. Also shown are the inscriptions "2009," "Countdown" and "XXX Olympiad." The London 2012 logo and Olympic Rings are featured in color.
