2009 UK Kew Gardens 50p Silver Proof Coin
General Coin Information
A 250th Anniversarry is being celebrated with the release of the the Royal Mint's UK Kew Gardens 50p Silver Proof Coin. The Gardens were started in 1759 when Princess Augusta donated a few acres of land. Today, the Gardens have become internationally known as a premier botanical center.
Like most facilities, Kew Gardens saw periods of vast growth, and periods of almost disrepair. Among the more positive changes were architectural elements that were incorporated into the Gardens. The Pagoda House, which was built in the mid-1700's, is an excellent example of incorporating trendy design into the center. At that time, it was common for Chinese influences to be seen in gardens.
During the height of the British Empire, plant samples from around the world were collected and returned to Kew for research. They would then catalog and preserve some of the samples, as well as determine possible uses for the plants that would benefit the Empire.
The Kew Gardens Silver Proof Coin is limited to just 7,500 units, struck from sterling silver. Each coins ships with a presentation case and a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Obverse Design
Ian Rank-Broadley's right facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin. The inscriptions "Elizabeth II," "DG REG FD" and the face value of "Fifty Pence " are seen as well.
Reverse Design
Christopher Le Brun's design of the Pagoda House is featured on the reverse. A plant is creeping its way around the house, and the years "1759" and "2009" are seen on the sides.
