2009 is a banner year for those interested in Abraham Lincoln as the US Mint has provided several 2009 Lincoln Coins to celebrate the bicentennial of his birth. 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollars
While the Lincoln Silver Dollars sold out from the Mint in a remarkably short time after meeting their minting limit, most of the buzz appears to center around the Bicentennial Cents.
The Birthplace penny was released early in the year, and had a nice demand before the two roll sets containing them were pulled from availability. It appears everyone was caught off guard with this abrupt announcement, and it forced a high premium on the units that were available from secondary sources like eBay.
Then in May, the Formative Years Cent was released at a ceremony in Indiana and met high demand. Evidently collectors did not want to run the chance they would not be able to get their hands on them like the Birthplace Cent. High premiums were the norm for these coins as well at first.
Interest seems to have leveled off, but both versions are almost impossible to locate in normal circulation due to low demand for new coinage from the banks. It will be interesting to see what happens later this year with the releases of the last two.
