Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Silver Dollar – Proof
General Coin Information
February 12, 2009 marked the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, and was also the day that the United States Mint released the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof. The obverse of the coin is based on the sitting statue showcased in the Lincoln Memorial bearing his name in Washington D.C. The reverse contains a portion of the Gettysburg Address speech made famous by the 16th President of the United States.
From humble beginnings, Abraham grew up amid harsh surroundings in the midwest of the United States. Self taught, he became a well respected lawyer in Illinois before turning to politics. He was elected President of the United States in 1861 and would serve his country during one of its most difficult times, the Civil War. With the end of the war just a few days before, Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865.
The commemorative coin was minted in accordance with the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Coin Act. A version is also available in uncirculated silver condition.
It was announced by the United States Mint on Friday March 24, 2009 that the proof version of the Lincoln Commemorative Coin was sold out. For more information, see Lincoln Coins Sold Out on CoinNews.net.
Update: 2010 saw new commemorative coins issued by the US Mint, one of which was the Boy Scouts Proof Silver Dollar.
Obverse Design
The obverse features a likeness of President Lincoln based on Daniel Chester French's famous sculpture which sits inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Also included are the inscriptions "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2009". It was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
Reverse Design
The reverse includes the last 43 words of Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech, the Gettysburg Address "…we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." This is surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" at the top. Beneath the wreath is a curling banner with the signature of Lincoln. Flanking the signature are the words "ONE DOLLAR" and "EPLURIBUS UNUM". Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse.
