Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Silver Dollar – Uncirculated
General Coin Information
An Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar has been issued in uncirculated condition by the United States Mint to mark the bicentennial of his birth. This was done in accordance with the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Coin Act.
Lincoln was born February 12, 1809 and would serve as the 16th President of the United States, arguably during the most significant internal crisis the country has ever faced, the Civil War. A quiet midwestern man, Abraham was for the most part self-taught, but this did not stop him from achieving the highest office of his country. Known for his courage and honesty, he was assassinated shortly after the end of the Civil War.
The coin features a likeness of him on one side, and an excerpt of his "Gettysburg Address" speech on the other. There is also an Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof version available.
The United States Mint announced on Tuesday March 24, 2009 that the uncirculated version of the Lincoln Commemorative Coin has sold out. For more information, see Lincoln Silver Dollar Uncirculated Coin Sells Out on CoinNews.net.
Obverse Design
The obverse features a likeness of President Lincoln based on Daniel Chester French's famous sculpture which sits inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Also included are the inscriptions "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2009". It was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
Reverse Design
The reverse includes the last 43 words of Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech, the Gettysburg Address "…we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." This is surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" at the top. Beneath the wreath is a curling banner with the signature of Lincoln. Flanking the signature are the words "ONE DOLLAR" and "EPLURIBUS UNUM". Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse.
