Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin – Uncirculated
General Coin Information
The Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin in uncirculated condition is offered in 24 carat gold for collectors. It is available August 6, 2009 from the US Mint and is the eleventh coin in a series paying tribute to the former First Spouses of the United States.
Julia married John Tyler when he was already President of the United States. He had lost his first wife, Letitia, shortly before and became infatuated with the beautiful Julia, who was 30 years younger than he was.
Only First Lady for 8 months, Julia proved quite capable of making her mark. She was considered instrumental in President Tyler's annexation of Texas, a feat that he gave her great credit for.
She also was known for ceremonial changes at the White House, including the requirement to play 'Hail to the Chief' whenever the President walked into the official functions. Julia also enjoyed dancing, and introduced the country to the polka, which soon became a national craze.
Also available is the Julia Tyler Coin proof version.
