Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coin – Uncirculated
General Coin Information
The Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coins in uncirculated condition are available from the US Mint on September 3, 2009. These 24 carat gold coins celebrate the contributions of the former first ladies of the United States.
The Sarah Polk coins are the twelfth issuance as part of the series even though Sarah was married to the eleventh President of the United States. This is because John Tyler had two wives (Julia and Letitia) while in office.
Sarah's educational level was far higher than most in the country and this was a positive attribute for a prospective first lady. She married James Polk in 1824, and the two made a great political duo.
James' ambitions led them to Washington D.C. where he served several terms to the United States House of Representatives. Then, after a term as Tennessee Governor, he was surprisingly elected as President of the United States. Sarah continued to support James by fulfilling the social obligations of a First Lady. Also, she served as his private secretary, a duty no other first lady has ever performed.
Also available is the Sarah Polk Coin proof version.
