As the third coin in the extremely popular Australian Sea Life Series - The Reef, from the Perth Mint, the Clownfish 1/2 oz Silver Proof Coin has been released.
The clownfish, made more famous by the Disney-Pixar blockbuster hit Finding Nemo, is a highly anticipated sight for those lucky enough to go diving near Australia. Their reef system plays host to untold numbers of these colorful fish. Many people even have clownfish in their salt-water fish tanks at home.
This coin marks the third in the Reef series. It follows the 2009 Lionfish coin, which experienced and early sell-out and the 2009 Leafy Sea Dragon coin. The Perth also plans to release coins portraying the Seahorse and the Moray Eel in 2010.
Each of these coins are struck from 1/2 ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Considered legal tender of Australia, each coin has a face value of 50 cents with a large diameter of 36.60 mm. Obverse Design
The obverse depicts Ian-Rank Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Also included are the inscriptions "Elizabeth II", "Australia", "2010," "1/2 oz. 999 Silver" and "50 Cents ".
Reverse Design
The reverse shows a colorful clownfish striped in orange, white and black. "Australian Sea Life - The Reef" and "Clownfish" are also shown.
