2010 Moray Eel 1/2 Oz Silver Proof Coin
General Coin Information
The final of five installments from the Perth Mint, as part of their "Australian Sea Life Series - The Reef" is the Moray Eel 1/2 Silver Proof Coin.
Contrary to its appearance which evokes thoughts of it being a menacing creature, the Moray Eel is actually not very aggressive. It can deliver a bad bite if provoked, but its sharp teeth shown by its open mouth and its snake-like appearance are usually enough to warn potential harassers. The eel tends to be reclusive and lives in the tropical and temperate reef waters surrounding Australia.
Each coin in the Reef series is limited to a maximum mintage of only 10,000 units which has proven to increase the desirability of these strikes. In fact, the first three released in the series (2009 Lionfish, 2009 Leafy Sea Dragon and 2010 Clownfish) have already attained a sell-out status, leaving only the 2010 Seahorse coin and the new Moray Eel coin still available.
Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of 99.9% pure silver to an uncharacteristically large 36.60 mm diameter. The coin's maximum thickness comes in at 2.30mm with a total minimum gross weight of 15.573 grams.
The Moray Eel coins ship in an illustrated shipper with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Inside the shipper along with the coin is a presentation case. Initial listed price from the Perth is AUS $50.
