As noted last week by World Mint Coins, the United States Mint has released the 2010 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin.
Available as of noon yesterday (Thursday, August 12, 2010), the 2010 Platinum Eagle sells for $1,892 each with a maximum household limit of five per household. The coins themselves continue the series of platinum coins which debuted back in 1997 and have been available annually since.
Making these coins even more unique and collectible is the fact that they also mark the second of six newly designed Platinum Eagle special reverse coins issued by the Mint which are emblematic of the six principles found in the Preamble of the United States Constitution. The US Mint asked Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court John G. Roberts, Jr. to write narratives based on those six principles and the reverse of the Platinum Eagles have been used to portray the themes of those principles.
Last year's Eagle was based on the theme ""To Form a More Perfect Union," with this year's strike using "To Establish Justice." Four more principles will be used in the next four annual Eagle releases and are slated to be as follows: 2011--To Insure Domestic Tranquility, 2012--To Provide for the Common Defence, 2013--To Promote General Welfare and 2014--To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity.
The reverse design of this year's "Justice" coin features a blindfolded Justice holding the traditional scales and a branch of laurel. It ships in a custom-designed portfolio presentation case with the specifications of the coin on the right and a copy of Chief Justice Gates' narrative on "To Establish Justice" printed on the left. The coin itself is in the center of the case with an image of the obverse of the coin printed above it.
A sell-out of this Eagle would not be unexpected. Last year's Platinum Eagle sold out in less than a week with only a mintage of 8,000 in place. The US Mint has established a maximum mintage of 10,000 for this year's coin.
