Taking less than 11 days from its initial release, the US Mint has officially placed the 2010 Proof Platinum Eagles on its "No Longer Available" list indicating it is now officially sold out.
The coin was first offered to the public on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Noon (Eastern). Initial price of the strike was $1,892 each, with a household limit of 5 in place.
Jump ahead just a few days and the Mint indicated it had sold an amazing 8,268 of the coins from its release through to the following Sunday. This accounted for 82% of the total mintage of 10,000 put in place by the Mint.
Just a few days later, on Thursday, August 19th, the Mint indicated the entire mintage of the 1-ounce .9995 fine platinum coins had been sold, but was accepting new orders to be placed on a "Waiting List." The Mint would only fulfill these orders if one of the previous orders had been canceled or returned for some reason.
The Mint is now beyond that point and by placing the Platinum Eagle on the No Longer Available list, indicates they have more than enough waiting list orders to guarantee a complete sell-out.
The 2010 Eagles continue the Platinum Program which debuted back in 1997. Making the strike even more collectible is the fact that the reverse of the 2010 Eagle contains a special design which is the second of six to be issued in a series honoring the six principles of the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States.
Those six principles and the year of their release are shown below:
- 2009 – To Form a More Perfect Union
- 2010 – To Establish Justice
- 2011 – To Insure Domestic Tranquility
- 2012 – To Provide for the Common Defense
- 2013 – To Promote General Welfare
- 2014 – To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity
Both last year's "To For a More Perfect Union" and this year's "To Establish Justice" strikes sold out making the remaining Platinum Eagle's due to be released over the next four years even more desirable. Be sure to see World Mint Coin's 2010 Platinum Eagle for more information on the coin.
