2010 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin
The American Eagle Silver Proof coins first appeared in 1986 alongside the bullion version of the coin.
Production of the Proof Eagles continued annually until 2009, when the US Mint cancelled the strikes. That cancellation was the direct result of overwhelming demand for the bullion Silver Eagles, which the Mint is required by law to strike to meet demand.
Record orders for the bullion strikes continued into 2010, but the Mint was able to ramp-up blank planchet supplies enough for the release of the Proof Silver Eagles on November 19th. The return marks the twenty-fourth year for the Proof Eagles.
The US Mint charged $45.95 per Proof Silver Eagle, an increase of $14 from the price it charged for the 2008 Eagles.
Obverse Design
The image shown on the obverse is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful designs ever struck on an American coin. It was first seen on the "Walking Liberty" Half Dollar Coin from 1916-1947 and is the work of artist Adolph A. Weinman. Also shown are the inscriptions "Liberty," "In God We Trust" and the year.
Reverse Design
John Mercanti designed the reverse to show a Heraldic Eagle with shield, meant to symbolize strength and endurance. Carried in the beak of the eagle are the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Also visible around the edge are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" and "ONE DOLLAR".
