The 2010 Grand Canyon Silver Uncirculated Coin is the fourth of five 2010-dated issues in the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin series. This coin of the series honors the Grand Canyon National Park found in the state of Arizona.
The Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin series is considered the numismatic version of the Mint's America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin® Program. Accordingly, both are struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver. The 2010-dated strikes, like this one, feature a diameter of three inches, however, future year's strikes may have a diameter in the range of 2.5 to 3.0 inches.
Both silver series contain obverse and reverse designs similar to a third series of coins from the US Mint - the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. As such, the reverse designs of the coins are emblematic of sites found throughout the United States and its territories chosen to showcase the natural beauty that can be found within the country..
Grand Canyon National Park, of which this coin represents, is just one of those chosen sites. The canyon was gouged out of the landscape by the erosive effects of the Colorado River which winds through the bottom of it.
Obverse Design
A portrait of George Washington is joined on the obverse of each America the Beautiful coin by the inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "QUARTER DOLLAR." The portrait was designed by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar.
Reverse Design
The reverse of the Grand Canyon Silver Coin shows an image of the granaries above the Nankoweap Delta in Marble Canyon near the Colorado River along with the inscriptions of "GRAND CANYON," "ARIZONA," "2010" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." It was designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
Edge Inscription
".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE" is inscribed on the edge of each coin to signify the coin's weight and fineness.
