2012 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set (US Mint image)**UPDATE**

The United States Mint published a product page for the 2012 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set™. According to that product page, the set will include eight different coins:

  • 2012-W American Eagle Silver Proof Coin
  • 2012-S Kennedy Half Dollar
  • 2012-S El Yunque America the Beautiful Quarter
  • 2012-S Chaco Culture America the Beautiful Quarter
  • 2012-S Acadia America the Beautiful Quarter
  • 2012-S Hawaii Volcanoes America the Beautiful Quarter
  • 2012-S Denali America the Beautiful Quarter
  • 2012-S Roosevelt Dime

All of the coin (with the exception of the Silver Eagle) are from the US Mint's facility in San Francisco. The silver eagle was struck in West Point.

**The original article posted here on World Mint Coins follows:

A 2012 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set is apparently planned for release from the United States Mint within the next several days. That fact, along with its anticipated pricing, is all the information collectors currently have available, however.

Despite attempts to seek out more information from the US Mint, none has been forthcoming up to this point. Even the fact that the set exists has been something of a question owing to Mint activities.

A listing for the 2012 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set™ was posted in the US Mint's Product Schedule online last week. That posting stated the set would be released on November 27, 2012.

Then, a few days later, the product schedule was modified and the set was removed. It has reappeared again, as of today, November 19, 2012, still with a release set for November 27th.

Also officially appearing today is a notice in the Federal Register indicating the price of the set. According to that notice signed by Richard A. Peterson, Acting Director, United States Mint, the set will be sold for $149.95.

Therein lies the end of the known information about the set to be issued. What is left is pure speculation.

Most concur that the new set will include the same coins as found in the 2012 United States Mint Silver Proof Set®. This set contains 90% silver proof quality examples of the five 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters, the 2012 Kennedy Half Dollar and the 2012 Roosevelt Dime. The set also includes proof quality 2012 Presidential $1 Coins, the 2012 Native American $1 Coin, the 2012 Jefferson Nickel and the 2012 Lincoln Cent struck from their standard circulating compositions.

Joining those coins in the set may be a 2012 Proof Silver Eagle. The individual Proof Eagles just sold out last week from the US Mint.

Assuming the aforementioned coins are the only ones to appear in the set, it will have a total silver coin melt value of 2.34 ounces (1 ounce for the American Eagle and 1.34 ounces for the remaining silver coins). Based on today' s London Fix of $32.67 an ounce, the melt value would be approximately $76.45. Only about half of what the new set is listed to sell for.

Even considering the US Mint typically places a significant mark-up on its numismatic releases over and above any melt value associated with it, it forces the question as to if other coins will be included in the set, or if any of these will be a part of the set to begin with.
