Caroline Harrison First Spouse Gold Coin
General Coin Information
The 2012 Caroline Harrison First Spouse Gold Coin will be struck by the US Mint and released as the third of four 2012 dated strikes of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series. Featured on the obverse of the coin will be a portrait of Caroline Harrison, wife of the 23rd President of the United States Benjamin Harrison, while a scene emblematic of her life will be showcased on the reverse.
Coins of this series started appearing in 2007 along with an associated series of Presidential $1 Coins. Each First Spouse Coin honors a former spouse of a President in the order in which they served. Both the Presidential and the First Spouse Coins were authorized as part of Public Law 109-145. However, while the Presidential $1 Coins are struck from a clad composition for circulation, the First Spouse Coins are struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold for collectors.
Caroline Harrison suffered health issues a majority of her husband's political life making her even unable to attend most winter social events in Washington D.C. while Benjamin was a US Senator. However, once they entered the White House, she did her best to fulfill the social duties required of her until her death in 1892.
Two different issues will be struck by the US Mint to honor Caroline Harrison - the Caroline Harrison First Spouse Gold Proof Coin and the Caroline Harrison First Spouse Gold Uncirculated Coin. These two coins will be identical except for their different finishes.
Obverse Design
Shown on the obverse of the coin will be a portrait of Caroline Harrison. It will be joined on the obverse by the inscriptions of "CAROLINE HARRISON," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "2012," "23RD" and "1889-1893."
Reverse Design
The reverse of the gold coin will showcase an image emblematic of the life of Caroline Harrison. It will also include the inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "$10", "1/2 OZ.", and ".9999 PURE GOLD.
