The Perth Mint of Australia has released the newest editions of the Australian Lunar Series II - the 2012 Year of the Dragon Gold and Silver Bullion Coins. Coins in these series are either struck from 99.99% pure gold or 99.9% pure silver to several different sizes.
Like previous releases in this series, these coins are centered around the Chinese zodiac with the 2012 strikes specifically depicting the fifth animal of 12 featured in the zodiac - the Dragon. Thus, a unique dragon design was created for both the gold and the silver Year of the Dragon Coins.
The Perth Mint will strike a total of nine different sizes of the 2012 Year of the Dragon Gold Coins. This includes 10 kilo, 1 kilo, 10 ounce, 2 ounce, 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce. Of these, no mintage limit will be applied to the 1kg, 10oz, 2oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz, and 1/20oz sized strikes.
A mintage limit of only 100 will be in place on the 10kg gram coins with those strikes minted to order. The Perth has placed a mintage cap of 30,000 on the one ounce Gold Dragon Coins.
Seven different sized 2012 Year of the Dragon Silver Coins will be struck. These include 10 kilo, 1 kilo, 10 ounce, 5 ounce, 2 ounce, 1 ounce and 1/2 ounce. Once again, no mintage limits will be applied to all but two of the strikes - the 10 kilo and the one ounce.
Up to 500 of the 10 kilo Silver Dragon Coins will be minted with no more than 300,000 of the one ounce coins produced. Final mintages for all of the coins will be announced once production on the series ends in late 2012.
It should be noted that these coins feature both a legal tender status and a government guarantee of weight an purity. Both offer investors and collectors peace of mind when it comes to the purity and value of the strikes.
Each coin will be encapsulated in protective acrylic before shipment.
