The first release of 2013 from the United States Mint will become available for ordering tomorrow. Beginning at Noon (Eastern) on January 8, 2013, the US Mint will release the 2013 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™.
This new set will be sold for $41.95, plus the US Mint's standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order. Included as part of the set are 90% silver proof quality examples of the five 2013-dated America the Beautiful Quarters.
Those five quarters include:
- 2013-S White Mountain National Forest Quarter (New Hampshire)
- 2013-S Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Quarter (Ohio)
- 2013-S Great Basin National Park Quarter (Nevada)
- 2013-S Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine Quarter (Maryland)
- 2013-S Mount Rushmore National Memorial Quarter (South Dakota)
Each set contains a total of 0.904 troy ounces of silver.
Coins of the set are each struck to proof quality at the US Mint's facility in San Francisco. As such, each bears an 'S' mintmark indicating the minting facility.
"United States Mint proof coins feature sharp relief and a mirror-like background," states the US Mint in describing the proof quality coins. "Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect. Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp relief."
Found on the reverse of each coin are the designs emblematic of the selected site of national interest. The obverse of each contains the same John Flanagan portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
The five coins are packaged together in a protective lens to help preserve their finish. The lens is then placed inside an illustrated sleeve depicting colored images of the featured sites found on the coins within.
2013 marks the fourth year of the Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Five new strikes are issued annually in the series each depicting a different site of national interest on their reverse.
