Today, January 24, 2013, the United States Mint released the 2013 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin. The strike went on sale beginning at Noon (Eastern) and is offered for $62.95, plus the US Mint's standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order.
The 2013 Proof Silver Eagle is struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver. It is produced at the US Mint's facility in West Point and carries the 'W' mintmark.
Shown on the obverse of each Eagle is a depiction of "Walking Liberty." This design first appeared on the 1916-1947 half dollar coin and is the work of artist Adolph A. Weinman. Since that debut many years ago, many have come to consider the image of Liberty to be one of the most beautiful ever struck on an American coin. Obverse inscriptions surrounding the design include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the year of 2013.
The reverse of the strike contains a heraldic eagle with shield design by former US Mint sculptor-engraver John Mercanti. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ FINE SILVER and ONE DOLLAR. Also shown on the reverse is the 'W' mint mark indicating the coin was struck at the US Mint's facility in West Point.
Proof Silver Eagles date back to 1986 when made their inaugural appearance along with a bullion version of the strike. They have been issued annually ever since except for 2009 when the Mint cancelled their production to divert all available blank planchets towards bullion coin production. That year saw demand spike for the related bullion coins.
Each Proof Eagle is encapsulated in plastic, then packaged in a blue velvet, satin-lined presentation case. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included with each order.
Orders for the 2013 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin may be placed directly with the US Mint via its online store located at http://catalog.usmint.gov. Orders are also accepted via telephone by the US Mint at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
