As coin be inferred from the name of the strike, the reverse contains the high relief image of a koala:
"The coin's reverse depicts an adult koala sitting on the branch of a eucalyptus tree, surrounded by gum leaves," indicates a Perth Mint release about the coin. "The design includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KOALA, the Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark and the 2013 year-date."
Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan designed the reverse image.
On the obverse, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II may be found, also in high relief. Inscriptions on the obverse include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the face value of 1 DOLLAR.
