2013 Fort McHenry Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin (US Mint images)The United States Mint today, August 29, 2013, released the 2013 Fort McHenry Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin for sale to the public. Each uncirculated coin is currently being sold for $154.95, but that pricing is subject to change based on silver market conditions.

Shown on the reverse of each is a design emblematic of Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. The national site is located in the state of Maryland.

This design also appears on the related Fort McHenry Quarters recently issued as part of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. When unveiled, the US Mint described the design with:

"The reverse design represents the site during the "Defenders Day" celebration, considered the centerpiece annual event held at Fort McHenry.  The fireworks symbolize the "rocket's red glare," linking the fort to its historic past.  Inscriptions are FORT McHENRY, MARYLAND, 2013, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.  The reverse was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna."

However, unlike the quarters, each of these uncirculated coins are struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver. In that respect, they closely resemble another related series, the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins which also feature the same designs.

There are some differences between the Fort McHenry Silver Bullion Coins and these uncirculated versions. First, the uncirculated coins are struck for numismatic purposes. As such, they feature the uncirculated finish and include a 'P' mintmark indicating they were produced at the US Mint's facility in Philadelphia.

Second, their method of distribution and initial cost are different. As numismatic products, they are initially sold directly to the public at a significant premium above any melt value associated with them. The related bullion coins are sold through the Mint's network of authorized purchases for only a small premium above melt values.

Finally, the Fort McHenry Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin is enclosed in a protective plastic capsule and placed in a display case for shipping.  A certificate of authenticity is also included.
