The Perth Mint of Australia debuts a new series of coins with the recent release of the 2013 Sydney Opera House 1/4 oz Gold Coin and the 2013 Sydney Opera House 1 oz Silver Coin. Both coins mark the inaugural strikes of the Perth Mint's new "The Land Down Under" series.
Coins of the series will feature reverse designs emblematic of Australia's iconic landmarks, ancient culture, unique discoveries and enviable lifestyle. Each of the new releases is composed of either 99.99% pure gold or 99.9% pure silver.
These coins were unveiled for the first time to the public at an exclusive event during the World Money Fair in Berlin.
“Australia is a land like no other, so we’re delighted to release a program that captures the essence of this magnificent country,” said Perth Mint Sales and Marketing Director, Ron Currie. “Sydney Opera House is an instantly recognised symbol of Australia, so it was a natural choice for the first gold and silver releases, and for the two larger hero pieces in the series.”
As indicated by the comments from Ron Currie, Perth Mint Sales and Marketing Director, to larger pieces will also be issued emblematic of the Sydney Opera House. These two coins will feature the same basic designs as found on their smaller counterparts but be struck from 2 ounces of gold or 10 ounces of silver.
The currently available coins feature a maximum mintage of 1,000 for the gold and 5,000 for the silver. Mintage of the larger strikes will be even more limited at 200 for the 2 ounce gold coin and 750 for the 10 ounce silver.
All four of the coins feature reverse designs emblematic of the Sydney Opera House. The silver coins offer a depiction of the Opera House with a colorful burst of fireworks shown above in the shape of the Australian continent. The gold coin features a different design of the Opera House.
