Today, March 28, 2013, the United States Mint makes available the 2013 United States Mint Proof Set®. The set will officially be released beginning at Noon (Eastern) and will be offered at a price of $31.95, plus the US Mint's standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order.
Included as part of the release are fourteen proof quality coins representing the circulating coinage of the United States for the year. There are no mintage limits or household order limits in place on the release.
Coins of the set are presented in three different clear plastic lenses. The contents of each lens are indicated below:
- Five 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters® (previously issued separately in the 2013 Quarters Proof Set) representing the fourth annual releases of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program including coins emblematic of White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial of Ohio, Great Basin National Park of Nevada, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine of Maryland and Mount Rushmore National Memorial of South Dakota
- Four 2013 Presidential $1 Coins (previously issued separately in the 2013 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set) representing the seventh annual releases of the Presidential $1 Coin Program with strikes honoring William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson
- One 2013 Native American $1 Coin (with a reverse emblematic of the Delaware Treaty of 1778), one 2013 Kennedy half-dollar, one 2013 Roosevelt dime, one 2013 Jefferson nickel and one 2013 Lincoln cent
Each coin is struck to proof quality at the US Mint's facility in San Francisco - a finish described by the United States Mint with:
"United States Mint proof coins feature sharp relief and a mirror-like background. Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect. Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp relief. The coins are then packaged in a protective lens to showcase and maintain their exceptional finish."
Orders for the 2013 United States Mint Proof Set will be accepted via the Mint's online catalog at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog. Orders are also accepted by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468). As previously indicated, a shipping and handling fee of $4.95 is added to all domestic orders.
The similar 2013 United States Mint Silver Proof Set® is scheduled to be released by the US Mint on May 2, 2013. This set contains the same fourteen coins, however, seven of them are struck from 90% silver.
