General Coin Information

One of three commemorative releases to appear in 2013 as part of a series is the 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Half Dollar Coin. Shown on the obverse of this strike are portraits of two 5-star generals - Henry "Hap" Arnold and Omar N. Bradley.

Along with the half-dollar coin, the United States Mint will also issue $5 gold coins and silver dollars in the program. Both of those honor different 5-star Army Generals.

All three coins were authorized by Congress with the passage of the 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act – Public Law 111-262. Under the terms of the Act, no more than 750,000 of these half-dollar coins will be released. They will appear in both proof and uncirculated conditions.

Surcharges of $5 per half dollar will be collected on the sale of each coin. These surcharges (according to the terms of the authorizing legislation) will be forwarded to the Command and General Staff College Foundation of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to aid in its support of the college.

Obverse Design

Portraits of 5-Star Generals Henry "Hap" Arnold and Omar N. Bradley grace the obverse of the 5-Star Generals Commemorative Half-Dollar Coin. The design was completed by US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill who will also sculpt it. Obverse inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, HENRY "HAP" ARNOLD, OMAR N. BRADLEY and 2013.

Reverse Design

Offered on the reverse of the coin is a depiction of the heraldic crest of Fort Leavenworth. The design was also completed by (and will be sculpted by) Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. Reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and HALF DOLLAR.
