General Coin Information

Appearing in 2013 as the second of five US Mint First Spouse Gold Coins for the year is the 2013 Edith Roosevelt First Spouse Gold Coin. This strike is composed of 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold struck to either proof or uncirculated condition.

Both the obverse and the reverse of the coin contain designs emblematic of Edith Roosevelt, wife of President Theodore Roosevelt. The obverse contains a portrait of the former First Lady with the reverse depicting a scene from her life.

This strike is released as the twenty-seventh in the series despite her husband being the 26th US President. This occurred because the stipulations of the authorizing act for the coins (Presidential Coin Act of 2005 - Public Law 109-145) allowed for Presidents who served in office with more than one spouse. As such, John Tyler's two wives (Letitia and Julia) were each honored on separate coins in 2009 for the program.

Edith Roosevelt married Theodore Roosevelt on December 2, 1886. They took residence in the White House on September 14, 1901 after he assumed the Presidency when William McKinley was assassinated. They were re-elected and served until March 4, 1909.

Obverse Design

A portrait of Edith Roosevelt adorns the obverse of the First Spouse Gold Coin. Surrounding her portrait are the inscriptions of EDITH ROOSEVELT, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 26TH and 1901-1909.

Reverse Design

Shown on the reverse of the Edith Roosevelt Coin is a scene emblematic of her life. Reverse inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "$10", "1/2 OZ.", and ".9999 PURE GOLD.
