Shown on the reverse of the coin is a head and shoulders likeness of a single koala. Pricing of the gold coin is extremely affordable and is currently at (AUS) 54.09 (US) $ 50.80.
"The koala is one of Australia's most endearing marsupials,"describes the Perth Mint of Australia in a release. "Nocturnal by nature, koalas will doze for up to 20 hours a day in the dappled sunlight which penetrates the middle canopy of their favourite trees. Despite grazing on more than a kilogram of leaves a day, koalas also like to snack and will often store leaves in their cheeks and in their pouches."
The 2014 coin is the second in an annual series. The 2013 Mini Koala Gold Coin made its debut in July of last year.
As mentioned, the reverse contains the likeness of a single koala with a design created by Perth Mint artist Michael Guilfoyle. The obverse includes Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Each "button-sized" coin features a legal tender face value of AUS $2 and is encapsulated in a protective acrylic capsule before being attached to a colorful wallet-sized presentation card. Mintage for the coin is unlimited with final mintage determined after sales have ended.
