Bullion 2013 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins Available Soon

Australian Kookaburra Silver CoinThe reverse designs and release dates for the bullion 2013 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins have been announced by the Perth Mint of Australia. The 2013 Kookaburra Silver Coins will be available for purchase beginning on September 3, 2012 in three different sizes.

These three sizes include a 1 kilo coin, a 10 ounce coin and a 1 oz coin. All three are struck from 99.9% pure silver, and, as the name suggests, contain a reverse design showcasing the kookaburra bird.

The design chosen for inclusion on the reverse of the 2013 kookaburra coins actually depicts two juvenile kookaburras perched on the branch of a tree. Surrounding the two birds, native flowers of their traditional habitat can be seen. Inscriptions found on the reverse include AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2013, 999 SILVER and the size of the coin, either 1 KILO, 10 oz or 1 oz.

Coins of this series first started appearing in 1990. They have been issued annually ever since and have become a favorite of investors and collectors owing, in large part, to the fact that the reverse design featuring the Australian birds changes annually.

These coins are struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. Face value of the coins is AUD $30 for the 1 kilo coin, AUD $10 for the 10 ounce coin and AUD $1 for the one ounce coin.

As legal tender coins of Australia, the obverse shows a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley is surrounded by the inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the face value of the coin.

Along with the legal tender status, these coins are also guaranteed for weight and purity. That guarantee is backed by the government of Australia.

Of the three coins, the only one with a limited mintage is the one ounce coin which features a maximum mintage of 1,000,000. The two larger coins will be struck to meet demand until they are replaced by the 2014 issues.

The Perth Mint places each Silver Kookaburra in a protective acrylic capsule.
