Fall of the Berlin Wall 1oz Silver Proof Coin

November of 2009 will be the 20th anniversary of the official Fall of the Berlin Wall. A structure that was built a few decades earlier by the former USSR to prevent free passage from their section of East Germany to the free areas of West Berlin.

Following the end of World War II, control of Germany was divided between the allies and the Soviet Union. Even though Berlin was located within the Soviet section, it too was divided. This created an area of tension as the USSR did not appreciate having part of a city in their territory that they could do nothing about.

Finally, in the 1960's, as a measure to prevent the Soviet citizens from defecting, the Berlin Wall was built. Many still tried to escape, some with tunnels, some with other means.

But by the end of the 80's, the political direction of the USSR was changing, and they chose to tear down the wall.
