Those interested in placing an order today for the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set issued by the US Mint were probably more than a bit irritated, at least if they attempted to do so around the launch time of Noon (Eastern).
Multiple reports have indicated that website users experienced long delays, if they could even get the site to load. An error message of "connection was reset" or "Service Unavailable" greeted many collectors as they attempted to add a set to their cart and then check-out.
Phone users found little more success. Many heard "We are unable to answer your call at this time. Please try again later," as they dialed in again and again to try and get through to place an order.
After a few hours, the Mint seemed to be getting a handle on the situation. Phone orders appeared to go through with little issue, and by mid-afternoon the website was responding for most. All issues appeared to be resoled by early evening with the website running as normal.
As of this posting, the limited mintage of 50,000 appears to be holding out, and the sets can still be ordered directly from the Mint via their website: http://www.usmint.gov or at their toll-free number of 1-800- USA-MINT (872-6468).
The price of the set is $55.95 plus shipping and handling, with a maximum order limit of one per household.
Sets have also been seen on eBay for several days now, but with their official release a flood of them has shown up on the auction site. The number as of this writing is approaching 100 with the average buy-it-now price appearing to be around $200, with some sellers asking much more. (see Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Sets on eBay)
