You would think that with the official release from the US Mint of the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles almost two weeks ago now, excitement would be completely gone over the set. This does not appear to be the case, however.
A quick glance at the time of this posting shows over 200 of the collections still being featured on eBay (see the eBay auctions shown below). Obviously, some enterprising individuals were able to get their hands on a set (or more with the help of friends and family) and are now looking to make some money off of them.
More surprising is the fact that a majority of the sets are actually selling, at least those that are more realistically marked. Some auctions have a price point of well over $400, but a majority of the successful sellers seem to be getting a price in the range of $150-$200. This is not a bad turnaround for an investment of around $60 with shipping.
You may recall that on October 15th, 2009 at Noon (Eastern), the US Mint released 50,000 of the sets for purchase either via their website or through the phone ordering system. Initial purchasers discovered some difficulties as the Mint's website and their phone operators could not keep up with the onslaught. After a few hours into the frenzy, things seemed to start settling down and orders could be placed relatively easily and efficiently.
It took longer than the day most experts thought it would take for a sell-out to occur, but only by a few hours. Late on the 16th, the Mint placed the Chronicles on a waiting list order availability, meaning if previous purchasers cancelled their order, or the Mint had to cancel an order for some reason, it would go to the next person on the waiting list.
Included in the set is an Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof along with proof versions of the four 2009 Lincoln Cents issued this year. The set also comes with a reproduction of the Gettysburg Address, an image of Lincoln and his signature as well as a Certificate of Authenticity.
But why are they still so hot on eBay. Obviously, many people were unable to order a set before they sold out from the Mint, or perhaps many collectors want more than the one set they were allowed to order. Either way, it is making for some happy sellers on the auction site.
