The United States Mint will be releasing the 2010 US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set this Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Noon (Eastern Time) to anxious collectors who have been awaiting the set's availability.
This release marks the second set from the Mint to include coins of the new America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which debuted earlier this year. The first set was the 2010 US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set which was released on May 13th.
The America the Beautiful series contains quarter dollars which feature reverse designs emblematic of selected sites found throughout the United States and its territories. The chosen locations all represent sites of national interest which showcase the beautiful and historical places which can be found throughout the country.
In the series, five quarters are scheduled to be released annually - with the five that are included in this set marking the premier strikes of the program. Coins found in the set are the Hot Springs National Park Quarter, Yellowstone National Park Quarter, Yosemite National Park Quarter, Grand Canyon National Park Quarter and the Mount Hood National Forest Quarter.
Only one circulating version of the coins in the America the Beautiful Program have so far been released by the Mint. It was the Hot Springs Quarter which had its release on April 20, 2010. The next individual release for one of the America the Beautiful strikes will be on June 3, 2010 for the Yellowstone Quarter. The official release ceremony for that strike will be held at the Old Faithful Inn located adjacent to the Old Faithful Geyser inside the national park.
All of the coins in this set are struck from 90% silver and 10% copper to a proof finish resulting in extremely sharp detail and a mirror-like background. The specifications for these coins are identical to their circulating counterparts with the exception of their content and weight. Since they are struck from mostly silver, each individual coin has a weight of 6.250 grams as opposed to the circulating clad quarters weight of 5.670 grams.
Those interested in purchasing the sets may do so directly from the Mint anytime after their release on the 27th via the Mint's website of http://www.usmint.gov/, or via their toll free telephone number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). The Mint also allows the sets to be placed on their subscription service which entitles customers to sign up to automatically receive the set (as well as future years sets unless canceled).
Price on the Silver Proof Set is listed at $32.95 plus the Mint's standard shipping and handling charge.
