Now available for purchase directly from the United States Mint is the 2013 Mount Rushmore Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. This strikes is issued as the last of five 2013-dated releases of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ Program.
Each Mount Rushmore Silver Uncirculated Coin is struck to uncirculated quality from five ounces of .999 fine silver. They also feature the extremely large diameter of three inches which are the same specifications used by the US Mint for all America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins.
Shown on the reverse is a design emblematic of Mount Rushmore National Memorial which is located in the state of South Dakota. The design was based on historical photographs of the construction of the sculpture.
It shows two workmen completing final touches on the Thomas Jefferson portion of the memorial. A profile view of the George Washington sculpture can be seen behind. Inscriptions are MOUNT RUSHMORE, SOUTH DAKOTA, 2013, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
As mentioned, these coins are issued as part of the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ Program. This series is nearly identical to the related America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ and contain similar designs to the related America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
All three series showcase the same basic obverse portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan. The portrait first appeared on 1932 circulating quarter dollars and has been seen, with minor variations, on quarters ever since.
To differentiate the uncirculated coins from the bullion variety, a 'P' mintmark is used on the obverse of the uncirculated strikes.
