The New Zealand Post has released a new series of strikes related to one of the most popular movies of the year. Available now for ordering are 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' Commemorative Coins.
These strikes each contain reverse designs depicting some of the main characters from the movie. Coins available now include a proof quality gold plated 99.9% pure silver coin and a Brilliant Uncirculated Aluminum Bronze Three Coin Set.
"New Zealand Post has worldwide exclusive rights to issue official legal tender commemorative coins celebrating Sir Peter Jackson's trilogy of films based on 'The Hobbit'," explains a statement on the New Zealand Post Coins site. "Each coin in this collection has been intricately designed and promises to be a lasting collectable of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'."
All of these coins are struck as legal tender of New Zealand.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ 2012 1oz Silver Proof Gold Plated Coin contains a reverse design showcasing the image of the main character, Bilbo Baggins. Surrounding the image is a gold plated ring with the inscriptions of "MIDDLE-EARTH - NEW ZEALAND" offered in both English and Dwarvish. An inscription of $1 is also placed in the design.
Shown on the obverse of the coin is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscribed around the portrait are the inscriptions of "NEW ZEALAND," "ELIZABETH II" and "2012."
These coins features a maximum diameter of 40.0 mm.

The three strikes include designs showcasing Gandalf the Grey with fellow Wizard Radagast, three of the thirteen Dwarves, and Thorin Oakenshield who was the leader of the company of dwarves. Inscribed around the images is "MIDDLE-EARTH - NEW ZEALAND" in both English and Dwarvish.
The inscription of $1 in each design indicates their legal tender face value.
