It has been a busy week for the United States Mint when it comes to its precious metal coins. First, commemorative and numismatic gold coins have been re-priced to lower levels. Second, numismatic silver coins previously suspended have been made available again.

Gold Coin Pricing Adjusted Down

The US Mint bases the price of its commemorative and collector-grade gold coins on a matrix linked to current market activity. This ties the price to the weekly London Spot average with adjustments made on Wednesdays, if needed.

As the gold market has seen some notable declines in the recent days, it was not unexpected to find the Mint adjusting its gold coin pricing down. In fact, the pricing actually was adjusted down two tiers according to the Mint's matrix.

The table below offers comparisons of the old price and new price of the affected gold coin products:

Star-Spangled Banner $5 Proof Coin
Star-Spangled Banner $5 Uncirculated Coin
Star-Spangled Banner Two-Coin Set

2011 1/10 oz American Eagle Proof Coin

The last adjustment to gold coin pricing occurred on February 29, 2012 when the Mint raised prices based on gold market activity.

Numismatic Silver Coins Return To Availability

On February 23, 2012, the US Mint suspended sales of several of its silver numismatic products as the silver market rose above $35 an ounce. This brought the price of the affected strikes apparently too close to their melt values forcing the Mint to halt all sales.

Those affected coins are now available again as the Mint has returned them to availability, and at their previous price points. The silver market has since fallen from that high bringing their price more in line with Mint costs.

Returning to availability are the following six silver numismatic products:

2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle
2011-P Gettysburg ATB Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin
2011-P Glacier ATB Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin
2011-P Olympic ATB Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin
2011-P Vicksburg ATB Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin
2011-P Chickasaw ATB Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin

The five ATB coins above represent all five of the currently available America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coins. Those coins are struck as the numismatic versions of the America the Beautiful Bullion Coins.
