Perth Mint Offers Australian Map-Shaped Kookaburra 2012 1oz Silver Coin

Australian Map-Shaped Kookaburra 2012 1 oz Silver CoinThe Perth Mint of Australia once again shows its willingness to create unique new coins with the release of the Australian Map-Shaped Kookaburra 2012 1 oz Silver Coin. This strike is featured in the shape of the Australian continent.

Shown on the reverse of the coin is a design depicting the iconic kookaburra bird. Each coin is struck from one ounce of 99.9% pure silver.

While many may not recognize the kookaburra by name, most will remember its call. It is best described by many as loud human laughter. For that reason, it has been featured in numerous movies and television shows.

The kookaburra itself is native to Australia and is a member of the terrestrial kingfisher family. Kookaburras are considered large birds and grow up to 17 inches in length. They are carnivorous and routinely feed on snakes, insects, mice, etc.

It is, perhaps, the fact that they are indigenous to Australia which leads them to be featured on coins of the nation. Kookaburra Silver Bullion Coins have been issued by the Perth Mint since 1989.

Collector grade Kookaburras are also a common Perth release. An example of this is the High Relief Kookaburra Silver Coin issued in May.

This newest release adds to the collector grade Kookaburra Silver Coin line-up. However, its unique shape makes it quite different from the rest.

The reverse of the coin depicts an image of the kookaburra sitting on a fence. Behind the bird, the Australian bush may be seen offered in full color. Reverse inscriptions include KOOKABURRA, 2012 and 1 oz 999 SILVER.

These coins are struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. They feature a face value of AUS $1 which is indicated on the obverse with the inscription of 1 DOLLAR.

Additional obverse inscriptions include AUSTRALIA, 2012 and ELIZABETH II. All of the inscriptions surround the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

With a limited mintage of just 6,000, the Australian Map-Shaped Kookaburra Silver Coin is available now directly from the Perth for $112.50.
