This new platinum release marks the second time the Perth has issued a coin in the platypus series. The first Platypus Platinum Coin debuted earlier this year with a 2011-dated strike with indications by the Perth that the series will continue into the foreseeable future.
According to the Perth, Platypus are:
"...unique to Australia and live beside freshwater rivers and lakes, where they create burrows for shelter and protection. The platypus is mainly nocturnal and uses its webbed feet for swimming. This unusual creature swims with its eyes closed and must return to the water’s surface for oxygen. The average lifespan of the platypus is twelve years."
Shown on the reverse of the coin is a design featuring the web-footed creature. The design was completed by Natasha Muhl and showcases the platypus underwater as indicated by the air bubbles and aquatic plants also included in the design. This is the same design as used in the inaugural release of the series. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions of "AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS," and "2012 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM."
The obverse of the coin contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions of "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and "100 DOLLARS."
That last obverse inscription indicates the coin is considered legal tender of the country of Australia. It is considered as such under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. As bullion products of the Perth, their weight, content and purity is also guaranteed by the government of Australia.
The Perth Mint indicated that the maximum mintage of the new coins will 30,000. This is the same mintage used by the Perth for the release of the 2011-dated strike which sold out.
As mentioned, each coin is struck from one ounce of .9995 platinum with a diameter of 32.60mm. The strikes have a gross weight of 31.12 grams and a thickness of 2.70mm.
The new bullion coins are available by calling the bullion desk of the Perth Mint at 1300 201 112 in Australia only or +61 8 9421 7218 for International Callers. These strikes will also be available through authorized bullion distributors of the Perth.
