USS Constitution 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin (Perth Mint images)

The USS Constitution 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin was released by the Perth Mint of Australia today, February 7, 2012. The 99.9% pure silver coin features a reverse design emblematic of the USS Constitution, a wooden-hulled, three-masted, heavy frigate of the United States Navy.

Each Constitution Silver Proof Coin is struck as the fourth release of the Perth's Ships That Changed the World Series. This will feature a total of five coins when completed and has been extremely popular with collectors.

The first strike of the series featured the Santa Maria, the largest of three ships used by Christoper Columbus on his 1492 voyage to the new world. It was followed by the Golden Hind 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin emblematic of the English galleon renamed by Sir Francis Drake for his voyage through the Strait of Magellan on the tip of South America.

Following that strike was the Mayflower 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin containing a reverse design of the Mayflower, a pivotal ship in the history of the colonization of the United States. Of those three previously released strikes, the Santa Maria and the Mayflower have already sold out.

USS Constitution History

The USS Constitution was one of six frigates authorized for construction under the Naval Act of 1794. She was named after the Constitution of the United States of America by the first President of the United States, George Washington.

After launch, she saw overcame many conflicts including the defeat of five British warships during the war of 1812. Given the nickname of "Old Ironsides" after that naval battle, the Constitution circumnavigated the globe in the 1840's. She was retired from active service in 1907 but today still remains a fully commissioned US Navy ship for ceremonial duties with an active duty crew. The Constitution is berthed at Pier 1, Bunker Hill, Boston, Massachusetts.

Constitution 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin Designs

Shown on the reverse of each Constitution 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin is a design emblematic of the USS Constitution. She is depicted in full sail in front of a colored globe map. Obverse inscriptions include "USS CONSTITUTION" and "1 oz 999 SILVER. The design is the work of Tom Vaughan.

The obverse of each coin contains Raphael Makloug's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. Obverse inscriptions include "QUEEN ELIZABETH II," "2012," "1 DOLLAR" and "TUVALU." The last two inscriptions indicate that the coin is considered legal tender of the island country of Tuvalu with a face value of 1 dollar.

A maximum of 5,000 of the USS Constitution 1 Oz Silver Proof Coins will be released by the Perth Mint. Each 40.60 mm coin will ship in a presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity inside an illustrated shipper.
