What is likely to be one of the most sought after numismatic items of the year was released for sale from the United States Mint last week. Available beginning August 8, 2013 at 12:00 Noon ET, the US Mint issued the 2013 American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin.
As with other popular recent numismatic products, the Mint has opted to not establish a pre-determined mintage cap for the Reverse Proof Buffalo. Instead, orders will be accepted for the coin during a four week period running from the release on August 8th through September 5th at 5 p.m. (ET).
Sales for the strike have been brisk since release. In the first 30 minutes of availability, a total of 12,630 coins were ordered. A sales odometer on the coin's product page is updated weekdays by 3PM with the most recent update (today, August 12, 2013) indicating a total of 24,883 have been ordered.
The Reverse Proof Buffalo includes the designs of James Earle Fraser first seen on the 1913 circulating nickel.
"Celebrate the centennial anniversary of one of the United States Mint’s most beloved designs – the American Buffalo. Designed by James Earle Fraser, a student of the legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the American Buffalo design was first featured on the Type I Buffalo (or Indian Head) nickel in 1913," indicates the US Mint on the coin's product page.
"We celebrate this 100-year milestone with an American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin. Reversing the mirror-like background finish of the traditional proof coin and applying it instead to the design elements of the coin achieves a magnificent visual contrast against the uniquely frosted background. This anniversary edition captures the beauty of coin design and the modernization of coin production over the last 100 years in one magnificent showpiece."
These designs are considered by many to be among the most beautiful to ever grace a coin from the United States Mint.

Similar Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins and Buffalo Gold Proof Coins made their debut from the US Mint in 2006. However, this marks the first time a reverse proof of the design has been issued. All three versions are struck from one ounce of 24-karat gold.
Current pricing of the 2013 American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin is $1,640.00. That pricing is subject to change, however, based on current market conditions.
