Undoubtedly, one of the most anticipated releases from the United States Mint is scheduled to occur today, June 7, 2012. Beginning at Noon (Eastern), collectors will be able to order the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set.
As indicated by the name, the set contains two American Silver Eagles - both struck to proof quality at the US Mint's facility in San Francisco. The set will be offered initially for $149.95, although as with all US Mint products, the pricing is subject to change based on precious metal market conditions (albeit somewhat unlikely).
This release date was announced in April along with additional details of the product. The existence of the set itself had only been unveiled a few days before.
The two 2012 Silver Eagles included as part of the set are:
- 2012-S American Silver Eagle Reverse Proof Coin
- 2012-S American Silver Eagle Proof Coin
Both are struck at the US Mint's facility in San Francisco. Standard 2012 Proof Silver Eagles are struck at the US Mint's facility in West Point making the two coins of the set unique for this reason alone.
Making the set even more desirable is the fact that one of them is struck to reverse proof quality. The US Mint elaborates on the fact with this statement:
"A special feature of this elegant two-coin set is the coin featuring a “reverse proof” finish. Reversing the mirror-like background finish of a traditional proof coin and applying it to the design elements of the coin achieves a magnificent contrast."
Another unique feature of the set, and one that may ultimately limit the desirability of it, is the fact that their is no initial mintage cap in place. Instead, the US Mint will offer the set for sale for four weeks running from June 7, 2012 through July 5, 2012. All valid orders received during this time-frame will be fulfilled according to the Mint.
With a relatively unlimited mintage in place, collectors may avoid purchasing the set in large numbers - at least initially. As the ordering window closes, and if the US Mint offers pending sales numbers, collectors may be more interested if the final mintage appears as if it will be somewhat small.
For example, last year's 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set was initially released with a mintage cap in place of just 100,000. Collectors, knowing the set would be rare, slammed the US Mint's ordering portals and even crashed the online store in the first few hours. The entire mintage of 100,000 was gone in less than five hours.
