The U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter is now available to the public from the US Mint and through the normal distribution channels. It was officially launched during a ceremony in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, late last week but has been in circulation since September.

Hosting the ceremony was United States Mint Deputy Director Andy Brunhart and United States Virgin Islands Governor John P. deJongh Jr. Deputy Director Brunhart also hosted a public forum at the University of the Virgin Islands seeking public comment on future U.S. coinage.

U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter

The Virgin Islands quarter is the fifth of six new coins to be issued this year as part of the D.C. and US Territories Program. It was preceded by quarters honoring Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa. In late November, the Northern Mariana Islands Quarters will be released.

An outline of the territory's three major islands is featured on the reverse of the Virgin Islands quarter. Also seen is the official bird and flower of the islands, Bananaquit and Yellow Cedar, respectively.

Those interested in purchasing the new quarters directly from the Mint will find they have two-roll sets as well as 100 and 1,000 coin bags available.
