General Coin Information
Offering its 21st annual version of a coin collectors and investors have grown to love, the Perth Mint has released the 2010 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin. Not only do these coins make great collectibles, but since the weight and purity is guaranteed by the Australian government, they make great silver investment tools as well.
The laughing kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher species and has become one of those creatures identified solely with Australia. The bird is native to the land 'Down Under' and can easily be identified by its call, eerily similar to human laughter.
Each year the design of the kookaburra changes on its reverse showing a new version of the bird. This design change helps insure greater collectibility of the coins and the limited mintage of the 1 oz. version further enhances its desirability.
The 1 kilo and 10 oz. coins will be struck in amounts to meet demand, but the 1 oz. will have a maximum mintage of only 300,000. Once the 2011 kookaburra coins are issued, the quantity struck of the 2009 1 kilo and 10 oz. coins will be announced.
All coins are composed of 99.9% pure silver.
Obverse Design
Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of the Kookaburra coins as well as the inscriptions "Queen Elizabeth II", "Australia"and the denomination.
Reverse Design
On the reverse of these coins is the image of a kookaburra facing right while perched on a branch. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions "Australian Kookaburra," "2010," the size of the coin and "999 Silver."
