General Coin Information

Serving as the inaugural strike of a new series of coins from the United States Mint is the 2010 Hot Springs Silver Bullion Coin. The five ounce .999 fine silver coin features a reverse design emblematic of Hot Springs National Park, found in the state of Arkansas and were initially released to the Mint's network of authorized purchasers on December 10, 2010.

Hot Springs Reservation was created by an Act of Congress on April 20, 1832 to preserve the thermal features found in the area for future public use at the request of the Arkansas Territorial Legislature who feared that the location would be abused by those looking to make a quick profit. It marked the first time the federal government had set aside land for such a use.

The status of the area was changed to that of a national park on March 4, 1921 and continued to be used for therapeutic baths much as it had been for decades. Today, the relatively small sized park receives well over one million annual visitors.

This coin is part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program from the US Mint which honors sites of national interest from around the United States. One site was selected from each state, the District of Columbia and the five territories for a total of fifty-six locations. Five of those locations will be featured annually under the program until is completed in 2021.

Each of the strikes in the America the Beautiful Program is composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver. The Hot Springs Silver Bullion Coin has a diameter of three inches.

These coins were not sold directly to the public by the US Mint. Instead, as with all the bullion products of the Mint, a network of authorized purchasers was used which obtained the strikes in bulk, then resold them to the public for a small premium above the current spot price of the five ounces of silver within them.

Obverse Design

John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington is featured on the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful Coins including this series of bullion strikes and the related series of circulating quarters and uncirculated silver coins. The design was first utilized on the obverse of the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been in use on the quarter in one form or another ever since. Along with the portrait, the inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," " LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "QUARTER DOLLAR."

Reverse Design

The reverse contains a design emblematic of Hot Springs National Park and shows the facade of the park's headquarters building with a thermal fountain in front of it. It was designed by Don Everhart and sculpted by Joseph Menna. It also includes the inscriptions of "HOT SPRINGS," "ARKANSAS," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "2010."

Edge Inscription

An edge inscription on the Hot Springs Silver Coin shows its weight and fineness with "999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE."
