General Coin Information

The second release of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program from the United States Mint is the 2010 Yellowstone Silver Bullion Coin. These five ounce .999 fine silver coins feature a reverse design emblematic of Yellowstone National Park, located mostly in the state of Wyoming and were initially released to the Mint's network of authorized suppliers on December 10, 2010.

Yellowstone has the distinction of being the first national park, not only in the United States, but also the world. It was created as such on March 1, 1872 by an Act of Congress signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. Yellowstone is well-known for its scenery, wildlife and thermal features that are spread out throughout the 3,472 square miles of the park.

Perhaps the best-known feature of the park is Old Faithful Geyser. While not the largest geyser in the system, its predictable nature has given it a special place in the memories of those who have visited. The eruption typically contains 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of water that shoots up 106 to 185 feet in the air. The eruptions can last anywhere from 1.5 to five minutes and occur on average 90 minutes apart (within a much larger range).

The US Mint's America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin Program was authorized along with the similar America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Both programs feature an obverse design of George Washington, the first President of the Untied States and a reverse emblematic of a site of national interest from around the United States.

Obverse Design

The inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," " LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "QUARTER DOLLAR" join a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, on the obverse of the coin. It was originally designed by John Flanagan for the circulating 1932 quarter dollar and has been featured on the quarter in one form or another ever since.

Reverse Design

Designed and sculpted by Don Everhart, the reverse shows Old Faithful Geyser in the midst of an eruption. Shown in front of and behind the geyser are two American Bison, also known as buffalo. The inscriptions of "YELLOWSTONE," "WYOMING," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "2010" are shown as well.

Edge Inscription

An edge inscription on the Yellowstone Silver Coin shows its weight and fineness with ".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE."
