General Coin Information

Continuing an annual tradition it started in 1999, the Perth Mint has released a collection of coins in recognition of the Chinese Lunar calendar called the Australian Lunar 2010 Year of the Tiger Silver Coins. In this years series, the Perth will be producing eight different sizes, ranging from 10 kilo down to 1/2 ounce.

As an official bullion coin from the Perth, the weight and purity of every coin is guaranteed by the Australian government. Each coin is also considered legal tender in the country under the Australian Currency Act of 1965.

Struck from 99.9% fine silver, the Perth will produce most sizes to meet demand until the 2011 Lunar coins are issued. The 10 kilo coins will be restricted to 500 units, and the 1 ounce coins will see a maximum mintage of only 300,000.

Each of these beautifully designed coins will ship in protective acrylic cases to preserve the strike.

According to Chinese culture, those born in the year of the tiger are courageous and natural leaders. It does not take courage however to appreciate the quality of these coins, both from a numismatic as well as an investment point of view.

Obverse Design

Surrounding Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse are the inscriptions "Elizabeth II," "Australia," "2010,", "999 Silver," the denomination and the size of the coin.

Reverse Design

A tiger is showing lying under a tree on the reverse of the coins. Underneath the beast is the inscription "Year of the Tiger."
